Kapalong, Davao del Norte——The Municipality of Kapalong proudly hosted the 61st National Fish Conservation Week cum Technology and Livelihood Day at the Kapalong Green Paradise, Maniki, Kapalong, Davao del Norte, on September 19, 2024. This event saw the active participation of fisherfolks from 11 local government units across the Province of Davao del Norte.
The event was spearheaded by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) XI in partnership with the Provincial Agriculture Office of Davao del Norte. Key officials graced the occasion, including Relly B. Garcia, CESO V, OIC BFAR XI Regional Director; Cloribencita D. Salvosa, OIC of the Fisheries Resource Management Division (FRMD); and Jricardo S. Mondragon, PhD, Center Director of BFAR-NMC. The Provincial Agriculturist, Jose L. Andamon, R.Agr., along with Alphabet G. Gulanes, PAGRO OIC Assistant P.G. Head, were also present at the event.
The keynote address was delivered by Arnel Montero, Executive Assistant to Governor Edwin I. Juhabib, who expressed the Governor's commitment to supporting the fisherfolk community. Montero emphasized the importance of sustainable practices in fisheries management, highlighting ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of local fishermen.
Welcoming the participants, Mayor Maria Theresa R. Timbol, represented by Arnel L. Panimbo, MPA-LG, LPT, the Economic Development and Investment Promotion Officer, extended her warm greetings to attendees. In her message, she underscored the strategic efforts of LGU Kapalong to bolster the local fishing industry, despite the municipality's distance from coastal areas. She noted the significant impact of the Kaagapay Program initiated by Governor Jubahib, which aims to uplift the livelihoods of beneficiaries in the fishery sector through innovative support mechanisms.
The event featured various activities, including a Livelihood and Fisherfolks Forum, discussions on livelihood opportunities that empower local fisherfolks, and the distribution of tilapia fingerlings and feeds for Kaagapay beneficiaries. Participants had the opportunity to engage with experts and gather valuable insights into modern aquaculture techniques and resource management strategies.
The celebration of National Fish Conservation Week and Technology Livelihood Day aims not only to honor the contributions of fisherfolks but also to promote awareness about the importance of sustainable fisheries.
