Kapalong Celebrates 127th Philippine Independence Day with Unity and Renewal
by

June 12, 2025

Kapalong, Davao del Norte

The Municipality of Kapalong marked its 127th Philippine Independence Day with a heartfelt celebration emphasizing patriotism, unity, and collective responsibility. The event, attended by local officials, personnel from the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Fire Protection, Department of Education, LGU Department and Section Chiefs, and the BFP's Kiddie Fire Marshalls, was a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of freedom and the ongoing journey toward a just and inclusive society.

The celebration commenced with a warm welcome from Mayor Maria Theresa Timbol, who expressed her pride in the municipality's resilience and called for a renewed commitment to nation-building. She reflected on the significance of independence, quoting Exodus 14:14, and highlighted that victory is not just through armed struggle but through faith, perseverance, and service.

Mayor Timbol's message emphasized that independence is a movement--a continuous practice of defending and living the values of freedom. She challenged everyone to ask: Are we still truly free? Or have we become dependent on material comforts, shortcuts, and complacency? She urged her fellow Kapalongians to exercise their freedom responsibly, using their voices to uplift, challenge injustice, and contribute to the collective good.

The event also featured a compelling speech by Marc Voltaire F. Daquigan, LGOO V of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, who delivered a message stressing the importance of unity, good governance, and active citizenship. Daquigan highlighted that "kalayaan does not mean doing anything we want," but doing what is right--even when it is difficult. He reminded the audience that true freedom must be practiced daily--free from corruption, fear, and apathy--and that good governance and civic responsibility are essential to safeguarding democracy.

The celebration included a parade showcasing patriotic songs performed by KCAST's Vice President for Research and Extension, Dr. Ronel G. Dagohoy and two (2) other faculty members , pledge of allegiance to the Philippine flag, reminiscing Philippines' history and declaration of independence, community prayer, flag-raising ceremony, and the singing of the Kapalong Namong Mahal. The participation of employees from various government agencies was vibrant, reflecting the collective pride and hope for the future.

In his speech, Daquigan underscored that kalayaan (freedom), kinabukasan (future), and kasaysayan (history) serve as guiding principles. He called on everyone to nurture their "tree of kinabukasan" with honesty, empathy, discipline, and perseverance, planting seeds of integrity, inclusivity, and shared responsibility. He emphasized that "kasaysayan" is not just about the past but an ongoing story written by every Filipino's actions today.

The speech also emphasized that kasaysayan is a call to action, urging everyone to remember the heroes of history--EDSA, frontline workers during the pandemic, and countless unnamed heroes--and to recognize that they are still writing the story of the nation. He challenged everyone to ask: When future generations look back, what will they see? A generation that merely celebrated independence once a year or one that lived it daily with bravery and purpose?

Mayor Timbol and Daquigan's messages resonated with the crowd, reminding everyone that "kasaysayan" is not just inherited but actively passed on through choices made every day. They urged everyone to make every day a celebration of freedom, to protect their liberties, and to strive for a future where dignity and justice are universal rights.

As he concluded, Daquigan emphasized that "dependence" is often lived in habits, comfort zones, and excuses. He called on Kapalongians and the Filipino People to free themselves from indifference, complacency, and fear--forces that still hold back progress--and to let freedom shine in their everyday lives through honest service and responsible citizenship.

He urged the audience--the government officers and employees--to see themselves as the authors of the next chapter of the nation's story--each decision, each voice, each act of kindness adding to the collective narrative of hope and resilience. He reminded that "Kalayaan," "Kasaysayan," and "Kinabukasan" are not just words but commitments to be lived out daily.

The speech ended with a call for unity and action: to protect freedoms, uphold values, and move forward together as one nation. Mayor Timbol concluded by encouraging everyone to make every day a celebration of independence--by acting with courage, responsibility, and hope.

This year's Independence Day celebration in Kapalong served as a powerful reminder that true freedom is a daily act--one that requires effort, responsibility, and collective resolve to build a brighter future for all.
